Cartooning Tutorial Cross hatching 2011 by Iranian American Cartoonist and Artist Kaveh Adel
A quick instruction on cross hatching.
Always pay attention to the light source.
Also the contour of the shape you are shading.
Start at the darkest point (the point most opposite the light source).
Draw concentric lines starting with tightest possible and gradually spreading out.
Then repeat the same pattern but at a slight angle (usually 90 degrees to the first shading line).
Continue with the next set f lines at a slight angle difference from the previous set and so on.
Remember: practice with different shapes, experiment. let your creativity run wild and most importantly, let yourself push the boundaries of reality.
Study the cartoonists you love and use their work as a template and the best form of practice is taking the techniques from others and adding your own creativity…who knows you may even come up with your own techniques that are emulated by others.
