Iran’s religious media which have close ties with the government are hugely criticizing the cinema star Niki Karimi because of giving a hug to Ezatollah Entezami, age 88, and a celebrated figure of contemporary Persian cinema.

But their goal, the Neanderthalized goal, is to segregate genders so much and beat this natural and beautiful connection that has already been frorcibly lost in Iranian film, visual and musical arts that such emotions  become associated with shame.  Neanderthals beat the emotion to such a pulp that being comfortably numb to one’s own gender and its counterpart, where inhumanity becomes somehow desirable.

I envision a very different outcome where a genuine and respectful embrace between two legendary artists of opposite gender becomes a reflective shield, a mirror in which the eyes who look at them in such a prehistoric gaze are exposed…. For it is not the gaze that matters but the intent behind it that speaks volumes.
