Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani صافی گلپایگانی issues a Fatwa against Shahin Najafi شاهین نجفی (Iranian Singer) in Diaspora who released a song called “Naghi” نقی seemingly offensive to Shia Imam. In essence Shahin Najafi (incidentally the name Shahin means Hawk) has been nicknamed the “Salman Rushdie of Music.”
On surface the lyrics may seem offensive but in close detail and srcutiny Najafi calls for the second coming of the Shia Imam, Naghi (bypassing the 12th Imam, Mahdi– who is supposed to return at the rapture) citing what the IRANIAN religious leaders have done in the name of Islam. By listening and analyzing the lyrics beyond the a few words of obscenity thrown in (which is Najafi’s raw style) one can appreciate his real understanding of the issues and his calling is beyond the supposed ridiculing of the Imam “Naghi.” Here is the Persian lyrics as well as the English translation with some background information.
No One…. I mean NO ONE has the right to call for the end of someone else’s life solely based on one’s belief expressed through words, art, music or self-expression no matter how offensive it may be and as long as it is not harming another person physically.
Freedom of speech is a right. It is a human right.
To deny that is to reduce one’s humanity to mere animosity.
